What should my child wear to nursery school?
Plain grey jumper or cardigan or grey, school jumper or cardigan, with or without the Castle Hill badge
Plain white polo shirt (Little Dragons Nursery polo shirt coming soon!)
Children need trousers/ leggings/ shorts/ skirts/ dresses that they can pull up and down independently such as jogging bottoms or trousers with elasticated waistbands. If your child is wearing buttons or similar on their trousers please make sure they know how to undo these. Accidents can happen when children can't get their clothes unfastened quick enough. We would prefer the colour of these to be a dark colour like black, grey or navy etc.
Children need shoes or boots that slip on or have velcro fastenings. No laces please.
Most importantly they must wear suitable, comfortable clothing. We encourage you to choose clothing that children can be active in and can get dirty as this is all part of learning!
My child has additional needs, what support will they get?
It is always important to share any details regarding other professionals involved with your child or if you have any concerns about your child to a member of nursery staff. A member of staff will contact you if they have any additional questions about this.
If you are concerned about your child's speech or understanding skills the best thing to do is speak to your health visitor or GP and ask for a referral to the NHS Speech and Language Therapy team before your child starts nursery. There are often long periods of time to wait before children are assessed, so it is better to refer as soon as possible. This will support your child with any difficulties they may be having. Early intervention is always best.
Where a child is identified as having SEN, we take action to overcome barriers to learning and put effective special educational provision in place. This SEN support takes the form of a four-part cycle (Assess-Plan-Do-Review) through which earlier decisions and actions are revisited, refined and revised with a growing understanding of the child’s needs and of what supports the child in making good progress and securing good outcomes. This is known as the graduated approach.
How do you support behaviour?
At Castle Hill, we have a restorative approach to behaviour management and our approach is based on having just 3 rules.
We believe that appropriate behaviour should be taught and modelled and the foundations for this are built on the positive relationships that we build with our children.
Does my child need to be toilet trained?
We would always recommend that you try toilet training over the summer holidays to give them a chance to become confident with this whilst at home. We will support toilet training at Nursery and discuss with you the details of how we can best do this to meet your child's needs.
You will need to provide wipes and extra clothing (knickers/pants, trousers, socks, shoes, etc) in case of accidents. We will keep you up to date with how things are going at Nursery and would appreciate it if you can keep us informed of how toilet training is going at home.
What else to bring?
When your child travels to and from nursery each day we ask they bring only a coat and no other items (e.g. backpacks). We want to encourage the children to be as independent as possible and lots of additional items can be hard for them to manage at the beginning and end of each nursery session. We do ask that at the start of each school term you bring the following items which will be kept in the nursery for them to use where appropriate:
Any medication, clearly labelled with their name and the correct dosage indicated on the forms (see office for forms)
Drawstring bag containing a whole spare outfit of clothes, including socks and underwear in case they have an accident or get wet or muddy whilst playing. If you know they are prone to accidents please provide more than one outfit in the bag and spare shoes. We will send home wet/soiled items in the bag if necessary and you can refill it and return it the next time your child comes to nursery.
Waterproof suit and wellies for outdoor play, clearly labelled with your child’s name
Please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of the Nursery staff if you have a problem providing any of these items as we do have some spare things we can lend children.
