Speech and Language Support

Speech and Language Support

Speech and language support happens at Castle Hill in several different ways. Some of our younger children have external support from outside agencies from a speech therapist. This is usually supplemented by twice weekly intervention from our specialist speech and language teaching assistant. Other language support might involve group social communication work or language acquisition group work. Sometimes children are selected to join groups to increase their confidence in speaking. Often the group sessions are just for a short period, perhaps half a term and as with all interventions the children involved are assessed before starting, during the intervention and at the end to check progress.

Language Link

All EYFS children are assessed using the Language Link screening tool after being in school for half a term. We then create intervention groups from the assessment results and groups have TA intervention twice a week to develop their language skills. The group activities involve fun games which help to promote good listening and encourage correct use of tense, concepts and vocabulary. Children are reassessed at the end of the year to track their progress.

Kodaly

Children who join the language link groups also attend Kodaly intervention twice weekly in EYFS. Kodaly is an active music session taught using the Kodaly method using activities which encourage the children to aurally, visually and physically engage with the rhythms they  are singing. Each session focuses on repetition and reinforcement of simple songs and rhymes.
