Dyslexia Interventions

At Castle Hill we have an intervention called Beat Dyslexia which was recommended to us through the SpLD Team. It is specifically for children who are at high risk of having Dyslexia or are diagnosed with dyslexia. There is a designated pathway flowchart which outlines the steps staff need to take if they are concerned about a child in their class. From the summer term of Year 2 teachers can then complete a dyslexia assessment pack. From this we then decide if a dyslexia screening is required, and from these results what extra support needs to be put into place.

The intervention follows Beat Dyslexia which is a literacy programme with step-by-step multi-sensory activities, covering reading, writing, spelling and grammar. The comprehensive programme develops literacy skills by combining successful phonological approaches, multi-sensory activities and structured teaching methods. The Beat Dyslexia programme is supported with other activities and games including Nessy Reading and Writing, where computer games and strategy videos are used to help reinforce the learning and nessy fingers to teach touch typing.

We also use Clicker 7, a child friendly word processor in class, Literacy Gold to support reading and spelling, Trugs card games, Dyslexia Stile a unique self-checking game which supports learning. Within the intervention each child uses and makes strategy and prompt cards for use in the intervention and the classroom to help remember what they have learnt and then use this in their learning back in the classroom.
