History is a subject where children have the opportunity to become detectives who explore the past in exciting and creative ways. Through history, each and every child can begin to understand why the world and its people are the way they are today through understanding the diversity of human experience, past lives and societies.

At Castle Hill, history is taught using an enquiry based approach and delivered through a topic-based curriculum. Children learn and explore the past through a wide range of resources including books, photographs, pictures and the internet. They use this evidence to make comparisons between life then and life now and they begin to ask relevant questions to lead learning forward. Children are encouraged to communicate their findings with others in a variety of different forms including fact files, presentations, posters, diagrams and drawings.

Children in Key Stage 1 develop their knowledge of local history through looking into significant British figures and events. Their historical skills begin to be developed through using a range of sources to find out information and using this information to ask their own questions.

Children in Key Stage 2 expand their knowledge and understanding by moving beyond British history and discovering significant events that happened across the world. Through this, they will learn and discover some of the world’s most fascinating civilisations such as the Aztecs and the Ancient Egyptians.

  • Discuss your own personal stories of the past.
  • Research historical figures / events together at home.
  • Get out old photos and see how they fit.

Photographs are a great way of bringing history to life, they can ignite a child’s natural curiosity and help them to develop an enquiring mind.

  • What did you used to look like?
  • How has …… changed?
  • Where did ……… come from?
  • Who lived here first and how do we know?
  • How has this place changed?
  • Why do we remember that?
