Throughout Castle hill, we believe that Art and DT is an integral part of the curriculum embedding creativity to all of our pupils. The children all learn about a wide range of techniques and media and how to use this within their own lives. Many Art and DT projects that are completed within this school are cross curricular allowing children to use art and DT throughout all of their learning, developing an understanding for its importance within their lives.
Our school engages, inspires and challenges our pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We often hold exhibitions that link to our current topic that allow the children to plan develop and evaluate their learning for a purpose. A recent exhibition held in KS1 was a ‘noble prize’ within our topic of inventors and inventions. We allowed the children to take on an enquiry based approach to learning encouraging them to design, test, make and evaluate an invention to be entered into the noble prize. We then invited parents and carers into our school to critique our inventions and vote for a winner. This project encouraged children to combine their different skills to design, make, join, and decorate their invention.
Art and Design Technology requires pupils to apply knowledge and skills to solve practical problems. It spans the curriculum and supports work in other subjects as well as real life experiences. This is valued highly in KS2 as they prepare the children for their future lives. Children are given Opportunities such as cooking and meeting Illustrators to develop enthusiasm for future careers.
Through well planned tasks, which allow the children to achieve the targets within familiar contexts, pupils learn how to take risks and become resourceful and innovative. These are essential skills for our pupils to develop as they prepare to take their place as adults in society. This is embedded within the children from the very beginning of their school life. The Early years foundation stage allow opportunities for children to explore with a variety of tools and media. The classroom environment is continually set up to offer opportunities for art and DT such as an outdoor work bench, paint easels and a making station.
As our pupils progress, they think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and DT. They develop knowledge of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture and creativity of our lives.
The quality of artwork and the talents of our pupils can be seen as you walk around our school. Our school walls and displays are full of inspiring pieces or art and DT allowing each child to develop a sense of pride seeing their work acknowledged by all of the staff and pupils.
Pupils are encouraged to develop designing and making skills as well as developing their knowledge and understanding of how things work. Focused practical tasks enable pupils to develop and practise particular skills and knowledge. There are also opportunities for pupils to investigate, disassemble and evaluate simple products, applications and structures.
